Community equipment services provide equipment to citizens to help reduce unnecessary admissions to hospital, prevent delayed discharge from hospital, and assist with everyday tasks, enabling people to live independently at home.

This type of equipment can range from simple mobility aids, such as crutches and walking frames, to more complex and expensive items such as profiling beds and hoists. Items are provided free of charge, on loan or single issue, to people of all ages who meet the agreed criteria.

Equipment is for use in individuals’ only or main residence, with a small range of equipment which can be provided in residential and nursing homes.

All prescribers must be trained in the use and assessment of the equipment they are recommending. Training, Clinical Supervision and Competency in the assessment and provision of equipment is the responsibility of the individual requesting the aid.
